Things to Never Do if You Have Veneers

Things to Never Do if You Have Veneers Veneers create beautiful and long-lasting smiles, thanks to their natural and polished appearance. These thin porcelain or resin laminates are thin as wafers and custom made to look like natural teeth. They are specially designed to cover the front teeth. We bond the shells to the front surface teeth to change their shape, lengthen them, resize them, or whiten them. Because they are strong, yet delicate, veneers need special care.

How Are Veneers Made and How Are They Used?

Veneers may be made from a resin composite or porcelain. We recommend the porcelain variety, as they are more stain-resistant and appear more natural. Their light-reflecting properties are much like natural teeth. We usually recommend veneers to patients who display discolored teeth, worn teeth, or teeth that are broken or chipped. We also suggest the restoration for teeth that are uneven or which feature gaps. Veneers can be prepared and added in two appointments. We shave a very thin slice of enamel off the teeth to add the restorations. Impressions or models of the teeth are taken so the veneers can be made. Temporary veneers can be worn during the approximate 2-week wait, if needed.

Applying the Veneers

Your veneers, when ready, are bonded to your teeth. We clean, polish, and etch the surface of each tooth so we can cement the veneers. Afterwards, we direct a special light on each tooth, which activates the chemicals in the cement. When this happens, the cement cures and hardens. We remove any excess cement and adjust the veneers, as needed. We may ask you to return a couple weeks later to see how your gums are responding to the prosthetic. You need to take precautions when you have veneers placed on your front teeth. You don't want to bite on hard objects or use your teeth as a tool. Make sure you maintain the appearance of the teeth by using extra care. While veneers are strong, they are not impervious to excessive abuse. If you feel you are a good candidate for this restoration, give our office a call. Veneers are great solutions for a bad bite, discolored teeth, or a crooked smile.
