Children's Dentistry
Norwalk, CT

Just like you, your child needs to brush and floss their teeth every day. In addition to home oral care, your child also needs professional oral care. However, the needs of your child are different from your own. Their mouth is constantly growing and developing. At Olson Family Dental, we can provide your child with the dental care that they need with children’s dentistry services.

Routine Cleanings and Exams

Along with regular brushing and flossing, your child should have regular dental visits for cleanings and exams. These appointments should be at least twice a year, or every 6 months. During the cleaning, we scrape all buildup from the surfaces of their teeth, including tartar, a hardened plaque that is impossible to remove with the bristles of a toothbrush. Once the teeth are scraped clean, they are polished and flossed. While cleanings help us to aid your child in the prevention of oral health issues, exams are performed to spot problems, and potential problems, before they become serious. We examine their teeth for signs of decay and cavities and look over the conditions of their gum tissue. We also assess their bite to make sure their jaws are properly aligned.

Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool, and they are an important tool in regular dental care as well. Even though they are not taken at every visit, they are still a critical component of the oral health record. With X-rays, we can see the hidden parts of the mouth. We can see between the teeth and spot cavities. We can look under the gum line as well. These images allow us to monitor bone development, check the development of adult teeth, and spot potential orthodontic issues. If we spot any issues, we can help you and your child to take action to prevent them from getting worse.

Additional Protection with Sealants and Fluoride

Children need to brush and floss every day, just like adults. However, it may be difficult to get your child to perform these tasks every day. They may protest, they may skip out on a session, or they may rush through to get back to something more exciting. Whatever the reason, children are at a much greater risk for developing cavities than adults. We can help to provide your child with further protection with sealants and fluoride. Sealants are a simple, pain-free application that is placed on the chewing surfaces of the molars. The material, once cured, covers over the deep grooves and crevices that can otherwise capture food particles and bacteria.

Once there, this debris can be difficult to remove. By preventing buildup in the first place, sealants help to stave off cavities in these areas. Fluoride is another preventative treatment. It is also quick, taking only a few minutes to apply, and is completely painless. After the teeth have been cleaned, we paint a fluoride gel on to them, and we are done. The fluoride contained in the gel absorbs directly into the enamel of the teeth. Fluoride is a remineralizer to the teeth, making it able to stand up to the acid attacks of plaque and bacteria. Dental care is just as important for your child as it is for you. To schedule an appointment for your child, call Olson Family Dental today at (203) 838-3132.
