Dentures and Partials
Your teeth have many responsibilities. Not only do the bite and chew, but they also control the flow of air when you speak, enabling you to form a wide variety of sounds and words. The teeth also play a critical role in the appearance of your smile. Losing your teeth has significant impacts on all of these functions, as well as your overall quality of life. Olson Family Dental can help to replace missing teeth with dentures and partials.
How Do I Lose Teeth?
Tooth loss has many causes. One of the biggest causes of tooth loss is a condition known as gum disease. This condition is progressive and starts with the irritation of your gum tissue. As it continues to get worse, the gums begin to pull away from your teeth, leaving a space for bacteria to fall in. Once below the gum line, the bacteria start attacking the periodontal ligaments and your jawbone, which weakens them. Your teeth become loose and eventually fall out or require extraction.
There are other causes of tooth loss as well, including:
||Facial trauma, such as a car accident, a sports injury, or a fall.
||Severe tooth decay.
||Bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of your teeth.
What are Dentures?
Dentures have been the go-to solution for tooth loss for hundreds of years. While they have been around for so long, they have undergone many developments and improvements over the years. The dentures of today look much more natural and are made to function much better. The basic design is still similar though. Dentures are a removable prosthesis that consists of teeth set into a base that is supported by your gums. Modern dentures use acrylic resin teeth, which can be made to look exactly like real teeth, and an acrylic base that is colored to perfectly match the color of your natural gum tissue. Full dentures are used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, whether it is the top arch, the bottom or both. Before taking impressions, we first remove any unhealthy, unsalvageable, teeth from the arch. Next, impressions are taken. These impressions are used to design and create a custom-fit denture that will fit perfectly on your gums, restoring the functions of your teeth and the appearance of your smile.
What About Partial Dentures?
If you are missing several teeth in one area of your mouth, but your remaining teeth are still perfectly healthy, we can provide a partial denture. This denture is designed to restore sections of missing teeth, avoiding the need to extract healthy teeth. The process for creating partial dentures is the same as creating full dentures. The design is similar as well, with partial dentures also having metal clasps that attach to your healthy teeth to provide additional support.
Taking Care of Dentures
Dentures do require some additional daily care. They need to be removed every night for cleaning, and they need to be left out every night while you sleep to let your gums rest. Dentures should be brushed with a soft bristled brush and denture paste. Do not use toothpaste, as toothpaste has abrasives that can scratch your dentures making them susceptible to bacterial growth. After they have been brushed, let them soak overnight in a denture cleaning solution. After taking care of dentures, it is essential that you take care of your mouth, even if all of your teeth have been replaced. In the morning, clean your mouth again, rinse your dentures, and set them into place. If you are missing teeth, replacing them as soon as possible restores your smile, the functions of your missing teeth, and your quality of life.
